Ascension of the Lord
(Acts 1:1-11; Eph 1:17-23; Matt. 28:16-20)
More than just a memory

Goodbyes and absences are very difficult. They leave an emptiness that is difficult to fill, especially when we depended on the person or had a close and intimate relationship with them. We may try to hang on to the person through memories, speaking about him or her, and doing the things they might have enjoyed making it seems, in a way, that our loved one is still present. Remembering in groups, as a community is even stronger. Speaking to others about the person, even if they never met, provides comfort because it means we are making them present in others. Keeping the person present among us, in reality, is an act of will. It even seems to reignite our love because we can never fall into the routines we often do when we see someone all the time.

After spending 40 days with his friends following his resurrection, Jesus ascends into heaven and it feels like a major blow. For them, it must have felt as if they were experiencing a second death. 'They remain perplexed looking up at the sky but Jesus had promised to stay with them. The angel tells them to remember the word of Jesus, to live it and keep it present among them. They do not have to keep staring up at heaven thinking Jesus has left them once again; instead they must live in the presence and life of Jesus.

Jesus tells them, to announce his good news and baptize in the name of the Father… This consists not just in getting other people to know Jesus intellectually, but bringing them closer to the living God. The Ascension is, therefore, the celebration of the powerful and living presence of Christ among us and it brings a great responsibility. The Christ that transformed us into the children of God along with Him invites and calls us to proclaim him everywhere with our life. How is this done? With actions that not only commemorate him, but also makes Christ present through our acts of love and attention to others; with acts of justice; with gestures of peace toward those who are close to us, and with honesty in our work and in our relationships. In all this we demonstrate that we continue to journey in hope, secure that the presence of Jesus is among us.
